I want to talk about this poster for a second. I’m sure several of you have seen it already today, I’ve seen it several times on my dash.
All the Rape, No Subtitles is an accurate description of the movie. That’s what happened.
Here’s the joke in this poster: Look we sensationalized rape again! Another movie that turns rape into entertainment! Haha, we remade the Swedish films and just took out the subtitles, have some rape for your enjoyment.
Hopefully now that I’ve put it in those terms you can see what a problem this poster is. But, if not, let me break it down for you. It’s simple: you just turned rape into the punchline of a joke.
Rape is NOT funny.
It’s not funny for the survivors in any way shape or form.
This poster is not funny for anyone who sat through this movie, trying not to have a panic attack from how graphic it was. It’s not funny for anyone who chose not to see the movie in order to avoid being triggered. It’s not funny for anyone who held hands with someone through that scene and still had to get up and leave to throw up.
Basically, it’s just not funny. Because it’s laughing about how rape is such an excellent form of entertainment, it got Oscar nominated.
And the fact I’ve seen it several times on my dash, is utterly disappointing. I know it’s in a collection of posters, but the fact that THIS poster is being spread around is continuing the idea that rape is considered a joke, and an excellent form of entertainment. Whether or not it’s with a collection of others, it’s still there. People are still laughing at it. For some, this is the funniest poster of the lot. Disappointing, indeed.
^^^Accurate, in every way.
Missing the point rambles as follows because I just felt like it oK:
I’m not sure how I feel about the poster, but on a related note: the movie wasn’t supposed to serve as just entertaining. Along with many of David Fincher’s other works, it was supposed to be confronting and real, rather than just scraping the surface and avoiding those harder themes to baby the audience.
The first time I saw this movie I had no idea there were going to be rape scenes at all, let alone ones as brutal as in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, since I had somehow managed to avoid all the chatter and hype surrounding the phenomena. And yeah, they were terrible and made me grip my movie seat a little harder etc. (pretty sure everyone in the cinema felt like this), but beyond those scenes the movie was so much more and by the end, I was suitably impressed. In fact, I loved it, and I doubt it could’ve been all that it was without those harsh themes.
Something on not missing the point:
Yay! Other people get offended by some things! Usually I just feel stupid for being offended by rape jokes (it only happens sometimes, but when it happens, uh, what to do, what to do, why am I being sensitive and stupid, this is dumb, omg).
